Heisui Dojo is the name we have chosen to represent the martial arts programming we offer in Orono, Maine and surrounding areas. The title consists of two words. The often used term "Dojo" means place (jo) of the Way (Do). This is a term derived from Buddhist and artistic traditions in Japan. It does not, however, connote any spiritual or religious affiliation. Instead, it indicates that the place we practice in is a place of reflection rather than competition. The term "Heisui" is a compound word meaning peace or stillness (Hei) and water (sui). So, Heisui means peaceful or still water. The image of water, a powerful element that can be at once peaceful and dangerous is a potent metaphor in the martial arts. It's also not a coincidence that our primary training space at the Keith Anderson Community House in Orono, Maine is located across the street from the beautiful Stillwater River. That's the Stillwater pictured above on warm summer evening. It is a broad, calm river that hides deep and unique currents.
I love the Stillwater River and I've come to love teaching our classes to kids and adults from across our region. I hope you will consider joining us this fall as we begin a new season of training at Heisui Dojo.
