I love the Stillwater River and I've come to love teaching our classes to kids and adults from across our region. I hope you will consider joining us this fall as we begin a new season of training at Heisui Dojo.
Heisui Dojo is the name we have chosen to represent the martial arts programming we offer in Orono, Maine and surrounding areas. The title consists of two words. The often used term "Dojo" means place (jo) of the Way (Do). This is a term derived from Buddhist and artistic traditions in Japan. It does not, however, connote any spiritual or religious affiliation. Instead, it indicates that the place we practice in is a place of reflection rather than competition. The term "Heisui" is a compound word meaning peace or stillness (Hei) and water (sui). So, Heisui means peaceful or still water. The image of water, a powerful element that can be at once peaceful and dangerous is a potent metaphor in the martial arts. It's also not a coincidence that our primary training space at the Keith Anderson Community House in Orono, Maine is located across the street from the beautiful Stillwater River. That's the Stillwater pictured above on warm summer evening. It is a broad, calm river that hides deep and unique currents.

We will be kicking off (see what I did there?) our Fall season with new classes for all age and ability levels.
Orono Youth Martial Arts will begin new sessions on Thursday afternoons in mid-September. Children in grades K-2 will meet from 3:30-4:30; grades 3-5 from 4:30-5:30 at the Keith Anderson Community House, 19 Bennoch Rd, Orono, ME. Registration is now open at Orono Parks and Recreation. Orono Middle School, High School and Adult Martial Arts will begin new sessions the first week of October. Registration for these classes is also now open at Orono Parks and Rec. Bangor High School Martial Arts Club will hold an organizational meeting on Wednesday, September 14, at 2:00PM in room A109, Bangor High School. New and returning members are encouraged to attend the organizational meeting for this FREE program. Self-Defense for Women, our one-night introductory seminar for women and girls, is scheduled for Tuesday, October 11 from 6:00-8:00PM. Registration is open through Orono-Hampden Adult Education. As always we offer private and semi-private training by appointment. Just use the contact form on this website or email the instructor at [email protected]. See you on the dojo floor! This Wednesday (8/17) is Karate Fun Day (2)! Please let me know how many attendees we'll have. No board breaking this time, but another special activity is on tap.
As always, these summer sessions are free, informal and open to students, friends and family. Please RSVP. I am trying to build a database of traditional martial arts schools in Maine and surrounding areas. Don't worry, I'm not selling anything and I'll never sell or give this list to any commercial operation.
I am working on a project and I'd like to reach out to as many trad schools as possible. I've found that a great many traditional classes don't advertise widely or market primarily by word-of-mouth. So, if you practice a traditional martial art (Japanese, Okinawa, Korean, Chinese, etc.) please consider sending me your dojo name and contact information. You can use the contact form on this website or email me directly at [email protected] . If you practice martial arts outside of the traditional spectrum such as sport karate, MMA, etc. I'd love to hear from you, too. Just indicate your style or gym in your message so I can keep my lists straight. Thanks! Join us to help our neighbors in need. The Vinal family lost their home to a fire recently and there is a benefit dinner and silent auction for them at The Roost. One of the items at the silent auction, tuition at Orono Community Martial Arts for one student - any session, any age group!
Here's a link to the benefit page: https://www.facebook.com/events/1758316534385470/ I finally got around to updating some links and resources. On our Friends and Links page you will now find a link to our Facebook group, "Orono Community Martial Arts" and a link to our student manual (PDF). This is an updated edition of an old student handbook I wrote several years ago. There is a 2009 version of this handbook that was stolen from me floating around on the web somewhere. If you encounter the old version, please disregard. This one has been edited to reflect our current practice.
